Review of Rise of the Evil Pancakes, starring Lloyd Kaufman, Christopher Kacy, and Michael J. Marnell

Title: Rise of the Evil Pancakes

Also known as:
N/A

Year: 2009

Genre: Horror / Comedy

Language: English

Runtime: 51 min

Director: Michael J. Marnell

Writer: Michael J. Marnell

IMDb: N/A

Plot:
Chemicals from a lab are dumped into a trash can where some pancakes had been thrown away as well, with the chemicals being combined it results in giving the pancakes life. Not sure what to do with their lives, the pancakes take to wandering the streets of New York, where one of the short stacks is squished by a hipster chick. The pancakes soon turn evil and declare that all hipsters must die. Thrown in the middle of the great New York Hipster Massacre, are Sam and Vinny who couldn’t be more clueless and just want to watch a good horror movie.

Our thoughts:
Where to start. Where to start. Where to start…

Alright. “Rise of the Evil Pancakes” is one of those movies that when you first see something about it or if you mention it to someone, the initial response is usually, “That’s stupid.” Or at least some variation of that thought. Well it is, but it’s one of those movies that’s designed not to be taken seriously. At all. In fact I’d go so far as to say I did something wrong by watching it sober or coherent. So there isn’t any reason that the movie’s more than obvious lowbrow intentions needs to be pointed out because, well, it would be pointless. With that, I could sit here and ramble on and on about what’s wrong or why it’s terrible but there really isn’t any reason to. Besides the fact that I didn’t find the movie to be terrible. Not entirely anyways. And “Rise of the Evil Pancakes” is not something you can treat like a normal movie either.

Besides, the movie actually would surprise a number of people when they watch it and realize that while it has this outward appearance of nutty absurdity, the movie actually has a point and something to say. It serves as a social commentary piece depicting the idea of a growing and out of control capitalist and industrialist system amongst a decaying economic state that is trying to repress the ideals of individualism, and eventually destroy those that do not conform to the system…Ok, maybe that’s not entirely true.

What is true is that “Rise of the Evil Pancakes” is almost like one big joke, cleverly ribbing horror movies, horror fans, horror critics (Wait, what?), and hipsters in a guise of an almost absurd movie made with tongue-in-cheek sarcasm. With that in mind, I have to say this was also a damn strange movie too. Not quite as strange as a Jordowsky movie, but more like “Space Zombie Bingo” or “Barn of the Blood Llama” kind of strange. Strange to the point that no description could really do it justice, it’s just something you have to see to understand.

So yes, a movie about killer pancakes attacking hipsters is pretty ridiculous and stupid, but you know what, that’s ok because Oh My Horror makes it work. There is more to the movie than one would think as it works as both a parody and a homage to cheesy horror movies, (and to those who watch them) which the people behind the camera are clearly fans of too. This may have been what helped make the humor work as well as it did and allowed the ribbing to be a little more subtle and clever rather than being just a straight parody. Plus, everyone involved clearly had fun making this movie, which made it easier for me to watch and laugh at it. Even with that, I would still have a hard time hating a movie where the people who made it are just doing their own thing and are having fun with it. And obviously have a good sense of humor to boot. At the end of the day “Rise of the Evil Pancakes is stupid, ridiculous, absurd, bizarre, over-the-top cheese but I still had fun watching it. Definitely not a movie for everyone though. Actually, it’s not even a movie for most people.

Positive things:
- Lloyd Kaufman
- Lloyd Kaufman in short-shorts.
- “There’s a pancake eating my eye! Oh my god!”
- Wasn’t afraid to poke fun of everyone or even themselves.
- I have to admit, the evil pancakes did look cool.
Negative things:
- Ya know. I’m just not even going to go there.

Rating:
Gore: 2/5
Nudity: 2/5
Story: 2/5
Effects: 2/5
Comedy: 2/5

TROMADANCE Review of “Rise of the Evil Pancakes”

The next film “Rise of the Evil Pancakes,” continued this over-the-top madcap take on cinematic spoofs.  This movie is kind of like a homage to Kaufman, who makes several sarcastic cameos in this exploration of vice, gore, soft, fantasy porn and purposely stupid plot-lines. In a unique, ironic twist, these killer pancakes haunted the streets of New York City preying exclusively on “hipsters,” those highfalutin fans of low-brow cinema.
